Free text Commentaries on policy and practice in adoption of black and minority ethnic children based on the experience in Britain and the USA. Transracial adoptions have generally been part of a "one-way" system with black and minority children being adopted by white parents. The author presents a historical overview of the situation in Britain and how the same-race policies in adoption have evolved. Review of findings of studies on the development of identity in black children adopted by white families. Although race-matching is not a guarantee for a good placement outcome, it offers, in the author's view "common threads with which important connections can potentially be made by an adopted child".
