Free text | Issue dedicated to considerations on giving the adoptive child a new name or keeping his/her birth name. Different contributors to the debate agree that it is a complex question and give their own views, while accepting that there may be a totally different significance for each adopting set of parents. In the section dedicated to health: "Pre and post adoption health of the adopted child and parental guidance", interview with Dr. Jean-François Chicoine, pediatrician at the St. Justine Hospital in Quebec, Canada. He created ten years ago an International Health Clinic where, together with other candidates for immigration, he sees adopted children referred to him by other pediatricians. Pre-adoptive health assessments for cases of inter-country adoptions are made with the help of the dossier of the child and any other information in the form of photos, videos, etc in the prospective adopters' possession. The parents are interviewed, with the child's dossier, to determine their ability to parent a child with potential special needs. Dr. Chicoine and his assistant, a pediatric nurse, have traveled to many countries of origin of children adopted by Canadian parents to, in a way, "map out" the health needs and problems presented by children in specific environments. |
