Free text Chantal Saclier, from the International Resource Centre for the Protection of Children in Adoption of the International Social Service reflects on the dilema facing professionals trying to work for the respect of the best interests of children in the face of existing situations of abandonment and institutionalisation in developing countries and the promotion of intercountry adoption as a solution to this problem. The ideal situation to work for should include national social programmes in prevention of abandonment (including support for mothers and families in difficulty, family planning and sex education programmes) and promotion of family-based alternatives for abandoned children instead of institutionalisation.
