| Free text | This book examines who the foster carers are, their joys, sadness and strains of fostering, the support they want and need and the reasons why they continue or cease fostering. It is part of a set of three complemetary titles that draw on the findings of three linked studies of foster care undertaken over a six-years period in seven English local authorities. Drawing on questionnaire responses from a thousand foster carers, the authors of this first part highlight the importance of providing support that: 1. is adapted to the carers' families 2. contains the basic elements of reasonable payment, relevant training and reliable social work support 3. responds sensitively to serious crises and trats carers as part of a team 4. meets the specific needs of carers such as carers'groups and relief breaks. |
