Free text Commissioned by UNICEF, this report on the situation of adoption in Guatemala was prepared by ILPEC. It contains background information on adoption legislation in the country, with comparative notes on legislation in El Salvador and Honduras. It contains statistical data on destination of children adopted internationally, ages of the adopted children and the biological mothers; case samples of domestic adoptions; review of a number of children's homes visited where children are looked after and from where adoptions do take place; information received from ISS on costs of an international adoption from Guatemala to a number of countries. Section dedicated to intermediaries in the adoption process. Information on DNA testing required by some foreign embassies. Evidence of an organised illicit traffick for international adoptions which violates the rights of the children involved. Proposals for a new adoption legislation.
