Free text The authors address the many issues surrounding adoption with commentaries and information on present practices in England and the USA. Historical perspective of adoption; presentation of results of relevant studies conducted in both countries including psychological consequences for adoptees, adoptive and biological parents. The new challenges presented by open adoption and adoption with contact; the need for counselling to birth parents before and after a child is placed; working with children facing placement; selection and preparation of adoptive parents and matching parents and children; transracial adoptions and interpretations of sometimes contradictory findings from studies of transracially adopted children; the situation of intercountry adoptions in the USA and Britain and some results on studies of children adopted internationally; issues surrounding single parent adoption and gay and lesbian adoption; the need for post-placement services for adoptive families. The authors warn of recent developments in adoption practice which puts the emphasis on the adults involved rather than on the needs of children.
