Free text | The author of this article reviews adoption research literature (particularly studies of Romanian children adopted in the USA) and proposes a way of classifying internationally adopted children based on a typology reflected in their character and outcome of their adoption: the "resilient rascals" who seem to survive well, regardless of their circumstances before adoption, the "wounded wonders" who, in spite of showing the effects of institutionalization, are reported to do well in their adoptive families after an initial challenging period and possible problems in life transitions; the "challenged children" who are severely affected by their institutionalization and are likely to always suffer from these effects. Preparation of prospective adoptive parents is emphasized. |
