| Free text | The authors presents issues surrounding the debate on adoptees' need to search for information on their origins. She develops the idea that adoptees can be influenced to search for blood relatives by search movements reflecting cultural biases and social pressures such as the belief that adoptive kinship is inferior. She argues that "the choice to search or not to search must ultimately reside with the adult adoptee" and that eventhough we live in a society that "stresses the paramount significance of the blood relation", the opening of adoption records and "fairness in the adoption system cannot be achieved by pathologizing adoption and denigrating adoptive bonds". |
