Amy Stevens is Founder/President of the Adoption Therapy Coalition (P.O. Box 1392, Rockville, MD 20850, USA). This is an updated article from her 1991 Guide to Mental Health for Adoptive Families (FACE Publications, Baltimore, MD). The author points out the reasons why adoptive parents seek out some form of therapy for their adoptive children. She advices consideration of "preventative" therapy, built into the adoption plan - for the child to be followed and assessed at various stages of his/her development. She gives indications as to what a parent shoul be looking for in the method used, and background of the professional therapist |
