Free text | This review of adoption and alternatives to adoption in five countries was commissioned by the Centre for Management and Policy Studies. The purpose is to provide an overview of the strengths and weaknesses and of ‘best practice’ in countries which have similar problems to those encountered in the UK. The countries are the USA, Australia and Sweden. (New Zealand and Norway are also mentioned as countries which have similarities but also some interesting differences). The focus is on children of all ages and disabilities who are in public care and in need of permanent family placements away from their birth parents.
