Free text The author presents the situation of Polynesian children (from French territories) adopted by Metropolitan French couples who do not live in the territories. Background information on French Polynesia and on the traditional adoption system or 'faaamu' which is under legal review. This system consists in a deliberate transfer, by the biological parents, of their authority on the child directly to a third person of their choice, with the adoption itself taking place when the child has reached the age of two. The author points out the various problems arising from this situation which differs from the French system where a child is declared abandoned by his biological parents before he becomes adoptable
