Free text Presentation by Rainer Frank (President of ISS), at a seminar in Salt Lake City, USA. Mr. Frank comments on adoption legislation in Europe. He states that in all European legal instruments, adoption is presented as "an attempt to imitate nature" (adoptio imitatur naturam) and that "the creation of artificial family relations without orientating upon nature" and the formulation of legal links through adoption by strangers that are not in a heterosexual marriage situation is a modern concept. Children have been known to develop favorably having been brought up by people they are closely connected to, such as grandparents, without being formally adopted. Adoption should be a legal instrument exclusively serving the best interest and protection of the child without catering to the "understandable human desire to publicly announce that ...the child belongs to them." Discussions on the situations of desirability of legal adoption by single, unmarried and same-sex couples.
