Free text The author, Associate Professor in Development Economics and independent consultant, points out how economic policy-making affects children and can, therefore, sometimes work against their best interests and violate their basic rights. The book focuses on children in developing countries, with facts and figures, such as the Human Development Index (HDI) from UNDP and National Performance Gaps from UNICEF's report The Progress of Nations and public expenditure ratio - the percentage of national income that goes into public expenditure -, which reveal a generalised trend for a widening gap between the poor and the rich, within a country and between developed and developing countries. Different sections of the book analyse how different economic policies affect children and families.
