Free text | Autumn 1999 issue of this publication from BAAF. Three articles on post-adoption contact: 1- evaluation on the experience, in the first two years of its existence, of the Post-Adoption Centre (PAC) Contact Mediation Service, based in London. 2- "Exchanging information post adoption. Views of adoptive parents and birth parents" - on the different experiences of those involved in adoption with the process of exchange of information between birth parents and adoptive children. 3- "Adoptive mothers' attitudes to contact. Highlights from an Australian study" - presents the influencing factors and "transitory rather than...static" quality of the parent's positions on contact. The mother's attitudes are seen to vary depending of life events and the moment in time during which such contact is proposed. "The tangible and intangible rewards of fostering for carers" and "Growing up in foster care" discuss findings from studies on the experience of foster care from the view point of carers and the children. In "The state's legitimate interest. An open letter to Matthew Engel", Charlotte Stevens, social worker and prospective adoptive parent, challenges the views expressed by Mr. Engel, jounalist and parent of an internationally adopted child, that "British adoption practice has become...obsessed with finding the perfect parents..." and therefore has turned the process of adoption (particularly of foreign children) an impossible task for prospective adopters. |
