Free text Updated guidelines available in English and French, produced by UNHCR to raise awareness of the special needs of refugee children and to guide its personnel, as well as personnel of any other organisation involved in providing assistance to these children. Chapter 10 on unaccompanied children, describes the particular needs of children who have been separated from their families, and actions needed to protect them - these include proper identification, and the search for family members. The HCR emphasizes the fact that adoption is not appropriate in situations where children find themselves separated from family members. Other solutions, such as foster placement, are deemed preferable to insure the protection of the rights of the child.
