Free text	In the Wiley Series in Child Care and Protection, this book deals with the permanent placement of children either in adoptive or long-term foster homes, between the ages of 5 and 9, considered a problematic time for adjustment to the new family situation, particularly in cases where the child had been abused or/and neglected in his family. The authors follow 61 children, thus placed, through the first year of placement. Among the elements taken into consideration were: the children's background and the type of problems within the birth family, a history of maltreatment, including sexual abuse, prior placement experiences, characteristics of the new family including the presence of biological children, placement of sibling groups, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, type of continuing contact with birth family. Chapter 6 deals with the preparation of the child to placement. Further chapters deal with the development of new relationships - with the new parents, with siblings and general peer relationships, the children in school, assessment of social work post-placement support for the parents and children.
