Received from Holt International: article by Kelly Mack, an Associate Editor with the Child Welfare League of America, describing the emergence of the specialized field of international adoption medicine in the USA as a result of "a boom in intercountry adoptions, and the unique medical problems presented by some children born overseas". The American Academy of Pediatrics is involved in educating professionals working with adopted children, including physicians, social workers, child welfare workers in the health issues associated with intercountry adoptions. Some of these professionals are involved in improving conditions of children in institutions in the countries of origin which could prevent developmental problems later on.
