Free text | In this 2005 report, the British NGO EveryChild underlines that the state of institutionalised children in the former “Eastern Bloc” countries remains a matter of concern. It advocates giving priority to solutions that focus on the family and addressing the causes of institutionalisation so as to eradicate the phenomenon. The proportion of institutionalised children in the region has increased by approximately 3% since the collapse of communism. EveryChild considers, moreover, that the official figures greatly underestimate the reality. The living conditions of children in these institutions remain extremely precarious in most of the countries reviewed. |
