Free text | The authors have added two chapters to the second edition of this book first published in 1998. Articles by a number of authors treat different aspects of adoption. The first article by the authors/editors of the book "Treatment Issues of Adoptees Placed as Infants and as Older Children: Similarities and Differences" recommends that "adoption services should be child-centered", that the best interests of the child should be the first consideration, with no fees paid to adopt a child and no "private-attorney-arranged adoptions" which are not well regulated and differ from state to state. Adoption professionals need to be more aware of "clinical issues (which) include loss and trauma, rejection, guilt, shame, negative self-concept, low self-esteem, identity confusion, isolation, and unresolved grief." Other articles: Infertility and Adoption, by Regina Kupecky and Karen J. Anderson; Shared Identity Issues for Adoptees, by Betty Jean Lifton; Search and Reunion Issues, by Jayne Schooler; The History, Elements, and Ongoing Need for Adoption Support by Rita Laws - on the importance of ongoing adoption support for birth parents, the adoptive child and the adoptive parents; Ethics in Contemporary American Adoption Practice, by Anne Babb; Treatment Issues in Adoption Practice from a Triad and Systemic Perspective, by Joyce Maguire Pavao, Victor Groza and Karen F. Rosenberg; Transracial Adoptions, by Karen F. Rosenberg, Kelli Steele Adams and Victor Groza - includes a list of web sites of interest for this subject; International Adoptions, by Victor Groza, Lindsey Houlihan and Karen F. Rosenberg |
