Free text	The author is a practicing psychologist, consultant and trainer in the USA. He is consultant to the Casey Family Program, Lutheran Family Services and other county departments of social services. In his words: "...in the case of chronic maltreatment, the child's...negative expectations may continue long after the child has been removed from the source of maltreatment. Even in the protective, loving foster or adoptive family, the child's suspicion, anger and anxiety about past caregivers, persist." And "..inadequate preparation and follow-up support to the parents (means that they) remain insufficiently informed of the significant behavioral and emotional challenges which the formerly maltreated child will present in care." The author explains reasons why there are an increasing amount of disturbed children in the care system; he presents common behavioural problems found in troubled foster or adopted children; he offers 'unconventional' strategies for helping these children.
