Free text Publication produced for the Department of Health containing a review of results of major studies on adoption and adoption outcomes for the purpose of sharing the information which emerges with practitioners concerned with child protection. The report was organised by chapters reflecting the topics covered by the different studies. Among these were: risk factors that could contribute to disruption in adoptions, preparation of the child, adoptive parents and other children involved for the adoption, selection of adopters and matching with children, contact with birth family, attitudes toward legal procedures involved in the adoption, post-adoption support for the children and adopters, organisation of adoption work in social services and the messages that emerge from these studies for policy and management for practitioners. Appendix I lists the studies described and Appendix II gives a listing of publications arising from the studies.
