Free text | Carl Jung's expression "the shadow", represents what he hypothesizes as the repressed and unexplored parts that we each carry, which can include repressed pain and wounds. Parents of wounded children meet these "shadows" through every day interaction and struggles with their children, and very often are at a loss on how to respond to them since their own unresolved issues will clash with their child's behaviour. Hurtful interaction will occur with what the authors call countertransference, and it is important that the parents understand this process so that they can help the healing process in their children. Holly van Gulden is the author of Real Parents, Real Children and is the founder of the Adoptive Family Counseling Center in Minneapolis. |
