Heidi and John knew nothing about each other for their entire lives. Then their mother died, and an uncle revealed to Heidi that she had a brother.
In January 2025, ISS Germany Familie international Frankfurt e.V. (fif e.V.) had its first counselling session with Heidi, who had only learned of her half-brother after her mother’s death. The news did not surprise her, as she had felt all her life that there was another truth out there. The father was said to have been a US soldier who returned to the US before the birth of the boy. As was usual in those years, the boy’s first name was changed, but unfortunately, this was not noted in the adoption file.
Before contacting the ISS network, Heidi asked a German TV show for support in her search, which she did not reveal during the counselling. The TV show started its search in parallel with the search efforts of ISS USA. Around the same time that ISS USA found John, he was also contacted by the TV show. This shocked him and made him defensive about responding to any of the letters he received in connection with his roots.
In November 2025, John and his wife contacted ISS USA. They were still quite wary about confirming any personal or historical information due to the messages they had received from the TV show about a film crew, flights to Germany, and so on. They describe themselves as private people, not interested in any part of these connections being televised or shared publicly. Step by step, ISS USA was able to gain their trust, and contact between John and Heidi began. The siblings met in the spring of 2026.
Heidi wrote:
“Thank you so much for your wonderful work. ISS, working across Germany and the USA, has not only reunited siblings; you have helped an entire family find a measure of truth and healing. You have changed so much. Thanks to what you made possible, I have gained three wonderful nieces, as well as additional great-nieces and great-nephews. I have also gained John and his wife. That is a tremendous gift. You have achieved something that brings people together—something that allows souls to heal and puts the mind at ease. I always felt that I was on the right path. It was also important to me to stay constantly updated on the progress of the search for my brother. I would certainly take this step again. It changes so much. If you don’t take the chance, you will never know what might have been possible. I am truly very happy about this wonderful journey.”
Katrina L. Clemons, Intercountry Casework Manager ISS USA worked on the case and shares following:
“On many occasions, we have the opportunity to facilitate beautiful connections, and this is certainly one of them. Tracing cases can evoke many emotions; hope, anticipation, and uncertainty. Being a part of a journey that can bring families and individuals closer together is a privilege, and we are grateful for the trust placed in us to help make these connections possible.“
